Since 1 January 2013, Birgisch and Mund have been part of Naters, after the three municipalities merged.
The municipality sits on a natural terrace in Upper Valais. This terrace runs from the right bank of the Rhone (Rotten) via the Natischerberg to Blatten and the Belalp, up to the Aletschhorn. Part of the territory belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage site Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch.
