From the Rhone to the Aletschhorn
The municipality lies on a natural terrace in Upper Valais. This terrace runs from the right bank of the Rhone (Rotten) via the Natischerberg to Blatten and the Belalp, up to the Aletschhorn. Altitudes range from 660 m on the Rhone to 4,195 m at the Aletschhorn. That difference of 3,535 m is the largest of any Swiss municipality.
Part of the territory belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage site Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch. The present municipality dates from 1 January 2013, when Birgisch, Mund and Naters merged.
